Greetings! Thoroughbred Retirement Rehabilitation and Careers is excited to announce and promote a new incentive for approved trainers competing in the 2020 Retired Race Horse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover, held in Lexington, Kentucky from October 7-10 at the Kentucky Horse Park.
As per the Thoroughbred Makeover's website statement of the event:
"The Retired Racehorse Project, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, created the Thoroughbred Makeover to showcase the trainability and talent of off-track Thoroughbreds. The competition is intended to inspire good trainers to become involved in transitioning these horses to second careers, and the National Symposium serves to educate the people involved in the care, training, and sale of these horses to responsible owners.
This is the only national gathering of the organizations, trainers, and farms dedicated to serving these horses when they retire from racing.
Hundreds of off-track Thoroughbreds, each with 10 months or less of retraining. Three days of competition in 10 different disciplines, vying for a share of over $135,000 in prize money. Thousands of spectators watching online and in person. And at the end, one overall winner crowned Thoroughbred Makeover Champion."
With the date of February 15 approaching, the Retired Race Horse Project will announce it's a list of accepted trainers who will then be choosing a retired thoroughbred racehorse to retrain and compete in a discipline they have chosen, up to two, at the Thoroughbred Makeover. These disciplines will showcase the horse's talent and training through their trainers in the months they have transitioned off the track into a new career. Final horse entries must be completed and submitted to the Thoroughbred Makeover by July 31, 2020.
TRRAC is offering approved trainers the opportunity to acquire a retired horse through its aftercare program, free of cost. The program will run from January 20 until July 31, where various horses will be offered to accepted trainers throughout this time. The horses offered on this list are horses who have been let down, microchipped and are up-to-date on their shoeing, vaccines, de-wormer, and Coggins. Most have unlimited career potential and are upper-level prospects. The horses offered have also been assessed by the program and if need be, have been rehabilitated from minor sports injuries. Most are accompanied by diagnostics such as x-rays or have visited New Bolton Center for a complete soundness assessment.
Aside from this program, ANY horse adopted from TRRAC (even outside the sponsorship program) is eligible for a $500 incentive, awarded to the highest placing competing horse acquired from TRRAC at the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover.
Stipulations of the program are as follows:
- Trainers must be an accepted trainer of the RRP Thoroughbred Makeover for 2020
- Trainers must have an approved application on file through TRRAC, available at this link.
- Acquired horses in this program must compete at the 2020 Makeover. If it is found the horse is unsuitable due to soundness, the horse may be returned to TRRAC at any time and a replacement horse may be offered.
-A contract must be signed between TRRAC and interested competitors acquiring a horse through this incentive. Certain restrictions apply.
- Trainers must register the horse acquired with TRRAC, including the horse's discipline they are competing in by August 15, 2020. This may be easily done on TRRAC's website. A reminder newsletter will be sent.
- Horses may be re-homed or sold at or after the Makeover and placed in the Makeover's ASPCA Marketplace with trainers donating 5% of the horse's sale price back to TRRAC and a transfer of contract completed to the new owners. This can be done the same day if the trainer has sold the horse at the Makeover. Horses entered in the Marketplace will be advertised through TRRAC either on the TRRAC website or at TRRAC's booth present at the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover vendor area.
- Trainers who have acquired a horse who does not compete at the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover will be required to pay a $500 adoption fee to TRRAC Thoroughbred Aftercare, or return the acquired horse.
- A $500 incentive will be awarded to the highest placing horse adopted from TRRAC competing in the 2020 Thoroughbred Makeover. The award money will be awarded within 30 days of the conclusion of the Thoroughbred Makeover after final results are calculated. In the event of a tie, prize money will be split.
- TRRAC will require a monthly update of the horse's progress in training in the form of a social media page, email or blog. TRRAC will reserve the right to repost content from each trainer, including photos as the organization sees fit, either in the form of a social media post, blog or website material.
