In Danger In A Broker Pen. Help Us Save Joe Don Looney

Joe Don Looney needs us before Saturday night.

Joe Don Looney is an 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding. He raced 43 times and earned $289,261 — an honest, hard-trying horse who gave everything that was asked of him. The people who profited from him have moved on. Today he waits in a Southern Ohio shipping pen, and if his bail is not paid by Saturday, October 24 at 8 PM, he ships.

A shipping pen is no place for a horse to end up. There is no stall with his name on it and no one who knows him — just a tag number, a ship date, and a crowded pen of frightened horses standing in the mud. When the truck comes, it does not take them somewhere better. For a horse who once heard his name called over the loudspeaker, who knew the hands that fed him every morning, it is the loneliest ending there is.

Joe Don Looney doesn't know any of this. He only knows he's somewhere strange, still wearing his racing plates, waiting. We can make sure the next trailer that comes for him is ours — the one that brings him home. TRRAC has an empty stall ready, with his name on it this time.

His bail is $1,600. Our goal is $3,500, which covers his bail in full, transport from Ohio, his first veterinary work, and his first month of care — quality feed and hay, bedding, farrier work, and daily hands-on rehabilitation.

You can also give by Venmo @TRRAC or PayPal.me/TRRAC — please note "Joe Don Looney." All donations are tax-deductible.
